source : abs-cbnNEWS.comMANILA, Philippines -- Though they had no vuvuzelas (plastic horns) as the South Africans did in the 2010 World Cup, local fans still loudly cheered the Azkals during their match against Mongolia in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Challenge Cup on Wednesday (Feb. 9).
Many were confident the Azkals would be victorious.
"The Philippines is going to win tonight... my fearless forecast,” former Senator John Osmeña said before the game.
As the Azkals outmaneuvered their opponents, fans came up with their own strategies to express their support.
Some wore Azkals jerseys, while others painted the Philippine flag on their faces.
And when the final horn sounded, pandemonium broke out as fans celebrated the victory.
Among the spectators was former Commission on Elections (Comelec) Commissioner Gregorio Larrazabal, who was thoroughly impressed by the team's efforts.
"Great game, Azkals!" he said.
In Metro Manila, football fans trooped to sports bars to watch the game.
Some couldn't help but feel patriotic, waving Philippine flags while cheering on the Azkals.
"This is a boost for Philippine football. You are an inspiration to us football players. Go Philippines!" said one Filipino fan.
Celebrations were held right after the victory.
Fireworks erupted at the Panaad Stadium after the game, not only to celebrate the win but also the country's newest sports sensations.
