PBA: Gilas try to stay perfect vs short-handed Llamados

source: gmanews.tv

Pilipinas-Smart Gilas seeks its sixth straight win to land the first playoff berth in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum.

And it couldn’t have come at a perfect time, as the Nationals face a Derby Ace Llamados side playing minus their best player in the 5 p.m. encounter.

The Llamados will miss the services of two-time Most Valuable Player James Yap for the second straight time, as the star shooting guard from University of the East continues to nurse a calf injury.

With Yap hurting, Derby Ace had to do without his vaunted outside shooting and lost to Meralco in its last outing, 89-86, in a game that saw the Llamados blow a huge 10-point lead in the final four minutes.

"Masakit na talo sa amin 'yun," admitted Derby Ace coach Jorge Gallent. "We only played good for 44 minutes and then nag-relax na. I just hope we can play aggressive basketball for the whole 48 minutes."

But the Llamados may just have a hard time doing what their coaches want. The team is decimated by injuries. Joining Yap on the injured list are back-up guard Jonas Villanueva (sprained ankle), and big men Jondan Salvador (knee), Don Allado (heel), and Raffi Reavis (foot).

The personnel woes definitely have a lot to do with Derby Aces' 2-4 record for a tie at sixth place.

And now the Llamados have to try to put it all together against the hottest team in the league.

The Nationals remained as the only undefeated team in the import-laden conference, their winning streak now at five games with their win against Rain or Shine, 99-94, last week.

JV Casio finished with a personal conference-best 29-points on 5-of-7 shooting from the three-point region, while Marcus Douthit had another double-double of 23 points and 18 rebounds.

Still, coach Rajko Toroman is not counting the Llamados out.

"Maybe they will be under pressure because they have to win. But they are a very strong team. They have talented and skilled outside players and strong inside players. It will be a difficult game for us but we will do everything to win," Toroman said.

Powerade and Meralco, two teams breathing down Derby Ace's neck, see action in the main game at 7:30 p.m.

The Tigers jumped back into contention for a playoff berth after rallying from a 14-point deficit to nip the struggling San Miguel Beermen, 99-91.

"We all understand the significance of this game. We are going to realize how strong our team character has become up to this point," Powerade coach Bo Perasol said.

Gary David exploded for 35 points in that huge Powerade win, making him the player who's definitely under the radar of Bolts coach Ryan Gregorio.

"David is a marked man," Gregorio said. "His production is even better than that of some imports. He must be contained at all cost."

The Bolts finally barged into the win column with that come-from-behind victory over Derby Ace courtesy of the hot shooting hands of Champ Oguchi in the fourth quarter.

And just like the last time, Gregorio said his team is taking its game against Powerade with a sense of urgency.

"Another do-or-die game for us," he said. "We can't afford to blink, we cannot relax and we must believe that it (advancing to the playoffs) an still be done despite our slow start. I am optimistic because we continue to show progress and our team unity is also getting tighter." - KY, RCJ, GMA News

PBA: Gilas seek to add Beermen to growing list of victims

source: gmanews

Pilipinas-Smart Gilas goes up against another giant ball club in San Miguel as it stakes its unbeaten streak in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup Saturday at The Arena in San Juan.

The Nationals have been receiving a lot of lauds following their impressive 3-0 start in the import-laden tournament for a share of the early lead with Rain or Shine.

Going into the lone 6 p.m. match that caps a day-long basketball schedule at the same playing venue in San Juan following the inaugural games of the PBA Developmental League in the afternoon, the Nationals face a third powerhouse team in the Beermen.

Pilipinas-Smart Gilas has already defeated two powerhouse teams in Philippine Cup champion Talk `N Text (103-98) and Fiesta Cup titlist Alaska (91-89, OT).

Although coming off a 102-99 win over the Air21 Express the last time out, Gilas coach Rajko Toroman is not looking past the Beermen, loser of two of their first three outings so far.

“San Miguel is one of the top teams in the PBA. We have so much respect for that team," said the former coach of the Iran national team. “They play good defense and they have the best players in the league. So we know it will be an exciting game."

San Miguel unveiled a new import in Danny Young in the team’s mano-a-mano with the Alaska Aces last Wednesday. Young finished with 35 points, exploding for 24 in the second half.

But he failed to nail the potential game-winning shot at the buzzer, his long three-point shot hitting the back of the rim hard and bouncing out.

Still, the tough loss doesn’t make the Beermen any less dangerous in Toroman's eyes.

“It will be a test of character, it will test the players," said the national mentor of his team’s first match-up with the Beermen.

San Miguel coach Ato Agustin acknowledges the Nationals have been playing as a cohesive unit, with 6-foot-11 naturalization candidate Marcus Douthit appearing to be a big threat in the middle for the Beermen.

Douthit averages 23 points and 21 rebounds in three games for Smart Gilas.

“They are playing well right now, so we have to match their intensity," said Agustin.

PBA Imports: No one is indispensable

source: mb.com

MANILA, Philippines – At this point, here is an early evaluation of the PBA imports who have shown their wares at the ongoing PBA Commissioners Cup.

It seems that the current crop of imports do indeed possess some explosive credentials but have so far failed to impress the PBA fans thus far.

While a lot is expected from these reinforcements, we have yet to see a consistent performance that the likes of Gabe Freeman (San Miguel) and Diamon Simpson (Alaska Aces) gave during their time.

They can fly, they can dunk and they can certainly contribute to the team. But as far as dominance is concerned, we have yet to see an import who will bring in the fans to the playing venues.

And as far as some teams (if not all) are concerned, the short format conference provides them with very little option as far as sticking to the right import that will lead them to the PBA glory road.

So far, there have been imports already sent their walking papers. This includes Ira Brown of San Miguel Beer, Jeremy Robinson of the Air21 Express and Robert Brown of B-Meg Derby Ace.

The three have already been replaced with David Young (San Miguel), Alpha Bangura (Air21) and Shamari Spears (B-Meg). Unfortunately, it looks like Spears may be replaced soon as well until he comes up with a worthy performance for B-Meg.

Meralco’s Anthony Dandridge and Powerade’s Russel Carter are likewise expected to be replaced soon.

To date, credible performances go to the likes of Barangay Ginebra’s Nate Brumfeld, Talk ‘N Text’s Paul Harris, RoS Hassan Adams and Alaska’s Larry Williams. While their teams aren’t necessarily perfect for now, they have helped their team become competitive.

Overall, there is no one import that one can consider as dominant. It has become a team effort and the PBA local players are certainly stepping it up against the foreign talent.
Unless the new crop of PBA import replacements can wow the crowd and render something fancy, success in the current PBA Commissioner’s cup tourney will seemingly depend on the home-grown talent’s performance.

And of course, Smart Gilas seems to have the inside track for now. The guest team has been making waves in the PBA conference thanks to teamwork and the system being employed by national squad coach Rajko Toroman.

Smart Gilas is experiencing success thanks to the likes of seven–foot Marcus Douthit, Chris Tiu, Marcio Lassiter, JV Casio and Aldrech Ramos.

So far, the Smart Gilas squad has downed two PBA heavyweights. They have defeated the Talk ‘N Text squad and the Alaska Aces thus far. They meet the re-tooled Air21 squad tomorrow.

PBA: Painters rip Tigers to stay unbeaten

source:GMA News

Rain or Shine grabbed the solo lead in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup by whipping Coca-Cola, 102-92, Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum for a first ever 3-0 start in franchise history.

A double-double effort by import Hassan Adams and a well-rounded contribution from the locals allowed the Elasto Painters to keep their unbeaten streak and register the team’s finest start in the league.

The three-game winning run also happened to be the first for coach Yeng Guiao in more than three years.

Adams led all Rain or Shine scorers with 21 points besides grabbing 11 rebounds. But he got substantial support from the rest of the Elasto Painters. Larry Rodriguez added 16 markers, Gabe Norwood contributed 14, Doug Kramer added 12 and 11 rebounds, and TY Tang chipped in 10.

The Elasto Painters led by as many as 16, 53-37, with 1:47 to go in the first half, but saw the lead dwindle down to 83-80 early in the fourth.

But Norwood ignited a 7-0 binge behind a five-point cluster to push the Elasto Painters back to safer ground at 90-80. Incidentally, Adams was sitting on the bench when Rain or Shine made the run.

Gary David lived up to his billing as the league’s top scorer with 24 points, 15 of which came in the third quarter when the Tigers got their offense going.

But import Russel Carter could only come up with 17 points, 15 below his scoring average. The Coca-Cola reinforcement, however, had 18 rebounds.

The Tigers fell to 1-3 overall.
